Tornado Kills One in Northern Illinois
Supercell thunderstorms generated a large tornado that arrived Thursday night in northern Illinois. One person is killed and eight people are injured in one tiny community because severe weather hit the Midwest.
James Joseph with the Illinois Department of Emergency Management said that one person was killed in the tiny community of Fairdale. DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said that other eight people were hospitalized.
Still, authorities are working near midnight to account for every resident. According to Scott, out of about 75 homes in the village of about 150 residents, more than 15 were damaged. Rockford Fire Department division Chief Matthew Knott said that every single structure in the town was destroyed because of it.
The National Weather Service posted on tweeter around 7 p. m. that a tornado was on the ground in close by Rochelle and also requested residents to look for shelter instantly. According to Robin Biggs, an employee at the Super 8 motel in Rochelle, she made video of the storm that of the storm.
"I have lived her 18 years, and I have never seen a tornado that big or stay on the ground that long. This just stayed down and went all the way across the horizon", said Biggs.
In a news conference, Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle said that more than 15 homes were severely destroyed but there are no reports of major injuries. According to Van Vickle, 12, people were trapped in the basement of Grubsteakers that is a Rochelle restaurant.
The restaurant collapsed at the time of the storm. According to Raymond Kramer, one of those rescued from the restaurant, he was trapped for 90 minutes. All 12 people were freed when emergency crews were able to remove debris that had fallen over them.
