Argentina lost in the Copa to Chile for second time, 23-year drought is not over

Copa America Centenary saw another historical image on Monday early morning. The 82 thousand people, appearing at the MetLife stadium in East Rutherford as the highest number of spectators in the history of football in America, expected another classy picture on the ground where Lionel Messi would be directing his as usual magical football.

But the image after Argentina lost to Chile 2-4 in the penalty shoot-out in the final for the second consecutive times in Copa, the packed stadium watched Lionel Messi blubbering and his tears seemed to have forced the world of football also to shed tears. A few minutes before one of the World’s best footballers of present time had ballooned the opening shot of the tie-breaker far over the posts which landed into the crowd finally.

Arturo Vidal, one the key men in Chile’s midfield had stressed 24 hours before the final on one point that Chile would die on the pitch to stop Messi from holding on to the ball much. And they were ultimately successful to materialize their plans.


Messi, whenever trying to hold on to ball and initiate for attacks, couple of Chile players were often impaling him and offering him harsh tackles. On the stage of some brilliant footballers like Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal, Sergio Aguero, it was the referee who alone hogged limelight by showing eight yellow cards and two red cards.

Considering the physical play in the game, sixteen fouls were made only One each from both Argentina and Chile was sent off. And Messi, even in his glittering resume had to leave the pitch with a scaring hole where he still has not yet been able to achieve the desired laurel for his country.
