Messi says good bye to national team in a shocking decision
Lionel Messi, who has wasted a penalty for the first time in his football career so far, has decided to retire from representing Argentina. The shocking decision was taken by the Argentine superstar after his country conceded second consecutive year in the Copa America Centenary on Monday morning.
Messi, who looked crying from sheer pain after having squandered the opening shot of the tie-breaker, has said to an Argentine newspaper, “I have decided not to play for Argentina anymore after this shocking defeat. I have tried my best over the years. But it hurts not to be a champion after all. I know many people also in country want me to say good bye to Argentina.”
After World Cup in 2014 and in the Copa in the last year held in Chile, it was Argentina’s three major championships where the national team had to be runners-up in spite of delivering consistently. And Messi has remarked, “How much sad it is I cannot explain now.”
Along with Messi, it was also Higuain who looked weeping, sitting on the bench amidst the jubilation of Chile. The striker could have ended Chile’s dream today if he had not wasted the golden opportunity to give Argentina a lead in the 21st minute.
Marcelo Diaz, the Chile midfielder who was sent off said after the match, “This has been the first time that Chile’s game reached the standard of World’s top teams like Germany, Spain and Italy.”
