On Wednesday, health officials said that a brain-eating amoeba has killed a teenager who had gone on a church trip in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mitzi Kline, director of communication for Franklin County Public Health said that the 18-year-old Ohio woman lost her life to primary amebic mengioencephalitis on Sunday.

It is an uncommon but deadly brain infection by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has verified the amoeba’s presence in her cerebral spinal fluid.
