Crow species caught on camera using sticks to "fish" for wood-boring larvae

Though it was known that New Caledonian crows use hook-shaped tools, the species found at a forested island in the South Pacific has been caught in the act on camera for the first time ever.

Known for their ability to make and use tools, the crows, among other things, use sticks to “fish” for wood-boring larvae hiding in dead wood or tree trunks by fashioning the sticks into sharp poking instruments.

The findings are part of a new study published this week in Biology Letters. For capturing the act of the crows, the scientists used specialized miniature cameras and 19 avian auteurs.

Super Metal Discovered By UCLA Scientists

Super Metal Discovered By UCLA Scientists

A revolution is likely to occur in the field of airplane, spacecraft and car production. A wonder metal has been made by the scientists of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The new metal has shown high levels of strength and stiffness-to-weight ratio, and is very light in weight. The scientists have created this metal by combining ceramic silicon carbide nanoparticles and magnesium.

‘Kangaroo Care’ Can Reduce Risk of Premature Death in Newborn

According to a recent review of a number of studies, kangaroo mother care can help to reduce the risk of death among underweight infants. Kangaroo care is a skin-to-skin contact of baby with mother.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health said it was earlier known that kangaroo mother care can benefit all babies in terms of oxygenation, temperature regulation, and pain tolerance. But the review revealed that it can also help in health and a dramatic reduction in mortality rates among low birth weight and preterm infants.

NASA’s latest Ceres pictures give scientists more detailed view of cratered worl

The dwarf planet Ceres’ photographs have been beamed back home by a NASA spacecraft from closest-ever vantage point. The pictures have given scientists a more detailed view of the terrain of the cratered world than ever before.

NASA's Dawn probe has captured the latest pictures of Ceres' southern hemisphere from an orbit that brought it nearly 240 miles from the surface of the dwarf planet. It is roughly 10 miles closer as compared to the International Space Station (ISS) is to our planet Earth in its average orbit.

Earth Faces Danger from Centaurs

Earth Faces Danger from Centaurs

The journal of the Royal Astronomical Society has published a new study which suggests that centaurs are bigger threats to Earth as compared to asteroids. The study reveals that further research is required to find centaurs, which are giant comets of 30-60 miles, outside our surroundings. The areas surrounding the outer planets of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are home to centaurs, which circle around the sun in unstable orbits.
