Comets are no longer mystifying space objects

The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission on Wednesday made a breakthrough in the field of space technology by successfully placing a small probe on the surface of speeding comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G).

Named after its discoverers, the 2.5-mile-wide comet is moving at a speed of more than 40,000 miles per hour (mph). Jean-Jacques Dordain, the director-general of agency, described the successful landing of the 220-pound probe, named Philae, on the comet as a "big step" forward for human civilization.

High Resolution Map of Ocean Floor Reveals Undersea Volcanoes

The high resolution map of the ocean floor created by researchers of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has revealed thousands of underwater mountains and extinct volcanoes that were previously unknown.

The study related to this was published on Thursday in the journal Science.

This new mapping done is in such high resolution that researchers state that it is at least twice as accurate as the previous version that was assembled nearly 20 years ago. There is a lot of improvement in these new maps, though they can only resolve features that are a mile high and bigger.
